Eesti Energia
Eesti Energia is a state-owned company engaged in the production, sale and transmission of electric and thermal power. Eesti Energia Group is the largest employer in Estonia with over 8000 employees. Its operating area is Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Jordan with 470 000 private customers and 26 000 business customers.
The main raw material for energy production – oil shale – is extracted from mines owned by the company. Energy is serving as a means to improve the people’s welfare. But there is also a downside – the energy production affects the environment. To lessen the environmental impact of oil shale production and the use of oil shale as fuel, Eesti Energia aims to make better use of the solid waste, including the oil shale ashes. The company is looking for wider uses for oil shale ash besides the cement and building materials industry, such as building materials for roads.
The company aims at quadrupling the utilisation of oil shale ash over the next three to four years. In these aspects the proposed project is expected to help making enormous step forwards.
